Lack of Education
Education is the surest path out of poverty — and every Haitian child deserves it.
Haitian families place enormous value on education, yet many children face serious obstacles to getting a good one. A large share of schools are privately run and charge fees, which puts schooling out of reach for many low-income families.
Other challenges include a shortage of trained teachers, overcrowded classrooms, limited books and materials, and long distances to school in rural areas. Disasters and insecurity can also interrupt schooling for months at a time.
Areas that need attention
- Affordable or free access to quality primary and secondary schooling
- Training, support and fair pay for teachers
- Learning materials in Haitian Creole and French
- Vocational and technical training linked to real job opportunities
- Adult literacy programs
How the diaspora can help
Haitians abroad include teachers, engineers, doctors, business owners and students. Mentoring, tutoring, sponsoring a student through a reputable organization, donating books and sharing professional knowledge are all ways to strengthen education in Haiti.
